1970 220D thinking of geting her back on the road

It has been a very long time since I have been on this form.
I still have my 220D I take her around the block about once a month. The power steering is not the best, hard to steer at slow speeds and in parking lots, this is part of the reason I parked it. I have been driving a motorcycle the last 5 to 6 years, but I do miss the 220D.

I think I may pay to get the powers searing fixed, just not able to work on her like I did 6 years ago.

I know it will not be cheep, any ides on cost, I need to stop by the Mercedes shop and ask. just trying to get my mind going.

I do miss this form

Do it yourself. The power steering could not be easier to work on and generally can be rebuilt too. If you go to the stealership, you better take two credit cards. Also how many of them have any actual knowledge of a 70's diesel or anything?

The first thing I would do is to suck out as much power steering fluid as possible, fill it back up, turn the wheel back and forth while idling about a dozen times to make sure it is full, and then try it.

You might be surprised.

I would never go to the stealership just a local shop to talk about it. and I forgot I need a front end alignment I replaced everything from ball joints, springs to the tie rod ends, I am sure I missed something.
I will try what you said, that pump does not come off very easy, its in a steel cage and very had to remove from what I remember, I need to get in there and get my hands dirty.

I finally got the girl back on the road. I thought I needed a front end alignment my right front brake was dragging. Brakes and calipers are all brand new when I parked her. I took all the brake shoes out exercise all the pistons on all all 4 calipers. I just received wheel seals so now I can check and repack the front wheel bearings. I change the oil brake fluid transmission and rear-end will be next. I just had my neighbor helped me put a front windshield seal in now I got the back to do later.

Couple pictures

Sure was nice to have somebody that knew how to put these windshields in. He said he's been doing windshields for 40 years so he's definitely seen a number of these and he said he likes the older more squared off model Mercedes.

On the power steering I put power steering stop leak in it a long time ago, I replace the power steering fluid at all seems to be good now. I keep sucking it out of the reservoir with a syringe then just refilling it I've done it for 5 times so far

Power steering pulley

Looks like someone tried to force this pulley on without lining up the key now I got two spots for that A Woodruff key. I'm going to put it back in the original spot make everything right the v-groove itself is all bent up I'm trying to get it straight is the reason I have it off, and I just replace the piece on the crank pulley with the two v groves by removing the three screws on the crank pulley itself I did not have to remove the crank bolt.

Back window trim by myself

So I got a picture of one side done and one side not done I think I'm going to do a video of me doing the other side tomorrow and put it on YouTube my hand still hurts I worked on it 3 hours at least today on and off once you work up a sweat get away that's when everything is all slippery and slides back out, everything needs to be dry to put the trim in, and lots of tape.

Rear window trim install

I made a video of me doing the other side today it's on YouTube
Window trim install 1970 220D should get you there on YouTube. This did kick my butt a little bit but I figured if somebody else could do it I could do it too. The key part is you have to have enough strength to literally push it into the groove not easy. No need to watch the whole video just go to the very end
