Badges and keys and the things i forget to ask when i'm able to get online

So my 1970 W114 paperwork from MB states its a "250C". The badge on the back of the trunk lid says "250". What happened? It's original...right down to the grime peering out on the sides of it.

Another thing:

I have 2 keys. One is black Plastic (I think) around the big end and the other key is metal. They both work in the ignition and i can't remember if they work on the glove box (i'll try it later..this is what happens when you near the half century mark!). Was there a separate one for the glove box? I didn't have a lockable gas cap that said Mercedes or the Star symbol either. Did they normally come with lockable gas cap?

Thanks again!

If it's a 2 door it's a 250C, if it's a 4 door it is not a "C". I believe the gas DOOR locks via vacuum actuator when doors are locked. I don't know if that was the set up back in 1970.

By 1970 MB went to a single key for ignition, doors, glovebox, trunk. There is not a locking gas cap for a W114 that I'm aware of. The metal vs. plastic is just whatever key blank was used, original might have been plastic and you can get new plastic heads that wear out after a couple years and you replace them again. There is probably a separate key blank that exists that is for "valet" - it will have a slightly different keyway and will not fit in the glovebox or trunk, but will fit in the ignition and doors. The cut of the key is the same, it's just that the pattern of the key is slightly different.

As someone else posted, if your car has 2 doors it's a 250C and if it has 4 doors it's a 250.

You sure it's the original? It may look old but not be original. The originals were often attempted to be ripped off, just like the hood ornaments. Someone probably just replaced it with the closest one they could find easily. Also, if someone did try to take it off, the "C" might have snapped off the end, leaving the rest. I've seen 280SE/L (missing the SE / SEL) and 300SEL like that.

It's a Coupe and states so on the Title and it also says so via the VIN# per Mercedes. This is why I'm confused.

I'll check into the vacuum lock.

Yep she's an original. I was thinking it was replacement badge too. I think when I have the body work done I'll have the correct badging put on it and keep the old one for posterity sakes.

Genuine M-B lockable fuel tank caps must have been an option back in the day before the outer doors were tied in with the central locking system. I've got one on the '74, one I found on a U-Pull W115 a while back. When locked the cap just spins. On W114 and W115 access to the fuel cap is not part of the vacuum central locking system - It's just a door that flips open with no provision for locking.
