w116 Turn Signals

I have a 1974 450SE I recently returned to service after 7 years of indoor storage.
Turn signals illuminate but seem like they are blinking way too fast.
Hazard flasher does the same.
I have replaced some of the bulbs and cleaned the contacts.
I believe the flashers have their own relay so that would not be a common point to look at.
Bulbs all illuminate and appear to be of the correct wattage.

What should I look into next?
Where is the turn signal relay?

Flasher Relay W115 W114

W116 uses the same relay. On a LHD model the relay is mounted behind the dash dust panel by the park brake mechanism.

Ok I will look into that. I wonder which of the top two relays controls the flashers?
There are three down there and I have already discovered the bottom one is for electric windows.

Make sure all the bulbs are burning when in the flasher mode. This is a classic symptom of a bulb burned out.

And if the bulb checks good check the socket for electrical connection. The ground, which is the bulb holder, is a known area to fail. But it is easy to fix.

You just need to hit it with a bit of sandpaper, both the inside of the socket and the metal body of the bulb, and when proper contact is made the flashing should stop.

That is, if this is the trouble.

The positive side of the socket, which is the small metal disc in the center of each socket, can also get loose. I have found a bit of aluminum foil stuck in there is all it takes to make the positive contact high enough to once again make contact with the bulb.

All bulbs do illuminate while the flasher is flashing.
Will look into the contacts further. Turn signal demonstrates exact same symptoms in either direction.
This is leading me to believe the flasher relay is the culprit.
I have located it under the dash but not yet replaced it.

I had the exact same problem with my w115. replacement relays were hard to find, although I did find a NOS in Brazil, on ebay. Bought it, hardly any improvement. I discovered my parts car 1984 w126 had a relay with one more pin, but plugged in to my w115 and made the car work perfectly. I have a longer post on here with all my troubleshooting details and different things I tried before doing that. Good luck!
