Forgot to say a part number for a 15 inch W123 steel wheel is apparently

1234001002

Please note for both of the part numbers I've quoted these are numbers found from searching on the interweb - not numbers where I've bought something with that part number on a sticker on the item or something I've ordered from the dealership =>

They could be totally incorrect - that's why I've said "use with care" - it could be fake news...

Intentional or not, incorrect news, as you said, does exist.

Hubcap ID help req'd please

See if there’s any way you can get these 7x15 et25 wheels. They sure look like 15” to me anyway, but check first. https://cpprohomeoh.car-part.com/image?seller=8763&partGUID=8763-1-38093&vehicleGUID=8763-1-V3677&display=1985%20Mercedes%20500%20SEL%20Front%20Bumper%20Assembly-Stock%23%20G0780

Edit... oh... do these attach like dog dish caps?

No. They attach like beauty trim rings.

Then that should be easier. I do know that the clips on 14” beauty rings are different than the later full face 14” caps. Have you ever tried to interchange the two types of clips?

Edit. Never mind. I feel stupid. Yes he later full face cap clips sit between the tightly spaced holes, and would clearly not work on beauty rings or these caps. Hopefully beauty ring clips are all that’s needed then.

I misspoke. I think it's a friction fit along the entire perimeter, not individual clips. There are actually THREE types of clips for the 14" full wheel covers and if you have the wrong ones they won't fit on your 14" full wheel covers. The clips that you are talking about for the beauty rings don't fit on the wheel covers to the best of my knowledge. I could be all wet on this - my memory of the wheel covers goes back a long time and I think I may be mistaken on part of this.

I may have to backpedal on my comment that 14” full face clips won’t work too. It seems they might possibly work on beauty rings. I had these in my basement. Notice the difference in beauty ring clip styles:

Slightly larger loop on the left.

I also recently bought a lot of 7 w123 caps and am glad I looked today at the clips I removed maybe a week or so ago. I hadn’t realized that many of them are the alloy wheel lips with plastic inserts. Score! I know my 107 clips have smaller loops than all these W123 clips.

And here’s why I assumed they wouldn’t work, as they fit between the holes like this...

But check this out... they seem to fit beauty rings too. I haven’t tried them on any wheels, but maybe they’d work.

It's sort of off-topic, but there are clips for 14" steel wheels, and a different clip for 14" alloy wheels. They will interchange between the two, however the clips with the nylon inserts are intended for alloy wheels for two reasons; they protect the alloy from being gouged, and they are also a little different in shape to compensate for the extra thickness of the rim.

If you install a clip for a steel wheel on an alloy wheel, it's a tighter fit and can gouge the metal. Here's the exception--if it's the first version clip from an early chrome-plated (as opposed to stainless steel) wheel cover, it won't fit an alloy wheel, nor will it fit a stainless steel wheel cover because the fit is too tight. The nylon-tipped clips also won't fit an early chrome-plated steel wheel cover.

In general, for hub caps that use these types of clips are not 100% friction fit The hump of the clip should rest in the valley of the wheels safety bulge.
