I just bought a 450 Sl with 180,000 miles on it. Seems to run ok and was a great bargain (I Hope). I need to find out the engine oil capacity with filter and I have a question about oil pressure. when the car is running the needle is pegged at 45 PSI. It never moves down less that 35 and thats only at low idle. Anybody know if this is normal? Bad sensor or excessive crankcase pressure?? How about manuals for maintainance and repair. Any suggestions?

It is normal for the oil pressure gauge to peg.And an idle pressure of no less than 35 is excellent.I suggest you buy some maintenence books you are going to need them.good luck.Michael.Carpe Diem.

Check out ebay for manuals. You should be able to get maintenance info on CDROM for a real bargain otherwise printed material will be excessively expensive for an SL.

it is a great idea to get a manual, but beware the bargain CD's on e-Bay. I bought one and it flat doesn't work. And no answer to e-mail's.

To answer your other original question. That motor likes 8 quarts of oil.

Pull the dip stick and take a wiff. If the oil has been there a while, it might well smell like gasoline.

Your fuel injection system (djet) has a reputation for running rich. In reality, its because the owners run poor and don't maintain it well.

If your oil does smell like there's a lot of gasoline in it, change it. And be prepared to change it again once you get the FI system straightened out (if it is indeed needed).
