welding up a cylinder head
I have a head from a 230S and it needs a bit of metal welded into a combustion chamber and around a couple of coolant holes. I have a very good welder but he wants to be sure to use the right filler material. He looked up filler rods or Mig wire and his info told him to use 4145 aluminum.
Anyone have a recommendation or used a particular sort of wire or rod that gave good results? I want to get this right the first time. |

I found this spec sheet and it looks to be OK with many al castings.
http://www.alcotec.com/us/en/support/upload/a4145tds.pdf There are a couple of welding forums that have probably covered this before. https://weldingweb.com/ https://forum.millerwelds.com https://weldtalk.hobartwelders.com Also, I'd be pre heating and TIG welding this not MIG because with this thick of a casting the start of a MIG weld will be cold. I have MIGed a couple of al castings with OK results but I'd rather have used a TIG. |
