1972 280SE 4.5 muffler

My 280SE 4.5 needs a new rear muffler and I am being told the part number is 1124913401. The 112 has me worried, and the only online source I have to EPC net shows several other part numbers all of which are no longer available, so is the 112 muffler what MB used as a replacement? Does anyone here know the correct part number?

I run into this a lot. The part might have first been used on a 112 but if Mercedes found it fit on a 108 or 109 they would have just ordered a bunch more and used them.

I have even found 115 and 114 numbers on later 111s. If they were found to be better Mercedes started using them. Either that or a previous owner used what they had and it worked great.

You might consider replacing the muffler with an aftermarket stainless one. It will be a bit louder but not by much. And it will never rust out!

Yep, right number. And seconded on the stainless. The car's been around for 47+ years, I assume you don't expect it to die any time soon.

I had the Timevalve SS put on my 72 4.5 about 2/3 years ago. It has been great, a little louder than stock.

One note is not to use the donut muffler hangers that come with it. Get the diamond shaped ones as used on the R107s, much more durable. The Timevalve came in a little cheaper that the OEM MB system.

Some OE hangers ( like on the R129 SL ) have a roller chain embedded into the rubber, this prevents the system from falling off when the rubber deteriorates.

The first 3 of the part number signify what car started to use the part then later cars retained the same number. If a revision was made to make it fit a newer model of car, say for an extra bolt hole, the new car's prefix might be used in the part number. The alternative is a change in the part revision level.

There is a more in depth decoder but I can't find it right now.

Some tidbits I found about deciphering Mercedes part numbers. Mercedes usually uses this format 123 820 41 64 (3 digits, 3 digits, 2 digits, and 2 digits). This is the p/n for a Driver's side tail light lens for a 123.

-The first three digits (123 820 41 64) are the chassis the part was first used on. This number can also be the engine number as well as other numbers.

-The second set of three digits (123 820 41 64) refers to which Group the part belongs to (ie. brakes, suspension, etc...). 820 refers to Body Electrical. This number is also used in the Factory Service Manual, group 82 section with all the body electrical service info.

-The first set of two digits (123 820 41 64) refers to which version of the part it is. Meaning there could be several versions or runs of one, part each with a slight modification. We have the 41 version of the lens.

-The last two numbers (123 820 41 64)are the part number in the master listing. In the number above we have the 64th part in the Body Electrical Group.

One more question RE the exhaust and that is did the W108067 come with chrome muffler tips or is that a dealer thing?

Mine came new with the chrome tips. The sales brochure from 1973 shows them as well on a 4.5.

I put the Timevalve system on my 1972 280 SE 4.5 in the 1990s. Working fine to this day.
Removed chromed tips from the Mercedes system and installed on the Timevalve.

The chrome tips were rather standard on German cars. Even VW bugs came with them. In fact, on the VW, you could not get them any other way.

But this was also a practical matter. The leaded gas of the day would eat up the exhaust tips. It still ate up the inside of the pipes on VWs; the chrome just let it hold together a bit longer.
