W108 250 Trans Cooler Line Leaking
Hey guys, long time no post.
I am bringing my 250SE back from hibernation and one of the many things I'm doing is flushing all the fluids and changing all the filters. So we replaced the transmission filter and pan gasket recently with new parts (113 270 00 98). The kit comes with washers too. After filling the transmission with fluid I am getting a leak coming from the fitting where the transmission cooler line attaches (just forward of the pan). There is a banjo bolt and 2 washers there. Any advice on keeping that from leaking? Do you use a thicker washer than what comes in the kit? I haven't even started the vehicle up, so this needs to be remedied. Seems like a very odd place for it to leak. I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Did you install a washer on each side of the banjo fitting?

Yes, I used the ones that came with the kit. The car has been sitting for many years, so I don’t know if this was previously leaking or not before the work was done.

Were the washers copper? Sealing washers are normally made of copper.

No they aren’t. I’m sure I can go find some copper crush washers to test. I attached a photo of the kit for reference.

Some of them are aluminum. usually tightening more will seal them.

As suggested, a little more tightness may stop the leak. If not you may want to get some copper washers and even coat them with a non-hardening Permatex gasket sealer.

I would vote for the copper crush washers. Permatex is OK for sealing engine stuff, but automatic transmissions have such small tolerances and a paramount requirement for clean, I wouldn't do it.
