How does the W114 Heater Control Valve work?

Can someone please explain how the Heater Control Valve work?

I will probably change it to an aftermarket 2 or 3 Port Valve. But, the original's design will govern the choice?

Thank You

Hot H2O from cyl. head into the center, two manual valves control the flow to the heater cores (L&R).
The returns of both cores are joined into a common return that enters the lower radiator hose.

Zoned climate control in a 1969 car. Amazing.

Thank you very much for your reply. It looks like this isn't a 3 port valves job.
