1971 115, hood cable snapped....
I picked up a 1971 115 mostly for the interior. I didn't even bother to open the hood before loading it up because the engine is, according to the seller, no good.
But I would like to get under there for some parts. But the hood pull just pulls and there is no release of the hood. So I guess the cable is broken. I figure I will just get under there and work it out, but if anyone has any tricks or tips I would be happy to hear them! There is no rush on this project. There is nothing under there I purchased the car for.

If you can grab the inner cable with vice grips from the inside your golden. if not I can take a picture of one I have mostly apart so you can see where the cable routing under the hood is. you might have to grab a hold of it and yank it out to be able to get a pull on it.

Yup. That's the only solution I can see. It is almost like Mercedes built in a back door since they knew these cables would someday snap.
So this is not hard. It is just time consuming. But that's enough to stop a quick grabbing of your battery or whatever else someone might steal. A safe expert once told me that no safe was uncrackable if you had the time. All anti-theft devices can do is slow down the perp. And for most crooks that's enough.

That's OK. Once I got under there and sort of orientated myself to looking at things from a weird angle it was pretty easy to understand how to open. All it took was time.
This locking hood appears to have been an attempt to keep folks from stealing your battery. I doubt this was a big problem in the US but since Mercedes sells all over the world I can think of a few countries where this would be a common thing. After all, back then, and even into the 90s, teenagers stealing hood stars was a common thing. Stealing a battery is only one step beyond.
