Where to get a W115 windshield?

Hi folks,

Looking to replace the windshield in my W115 240D (1974). I'm having a little trouble finding one. Any ideas where a good place to get some glass would be?

Thanks!

I got my last one from Safelite but there are several other vendor who have them. Be advised, if the gasket is more than five years old it will need to be replaced and most (95%) of the installers will refuse to install a windscreen unless the gasket is replaced.

Be glad you do not have a coupe` as the last one I had replaced in my 280C was $700.00+ USD AND I had to have it shipped from Colorado.

Thanks! My gasket leaks horribly (cost me $500 in floor pan welding when I first bought the car!) so I've already bought a fresh one and it's ready to go!

Hope you bought the OEM gasket from MB and not any other...

When you get this figured out please let us know where you found the glass and how much it cost.

A fellow I know here in New Mexico recently bought a windshield for his W114 coupe. He could not find it through local suppliers and ended up buying one from England. The glass is by Pilkington and cost him $400. Granted, coupe and sedan glass is different, but I wonder how easy it is to find a front windshield for a W115 sedan nowadays. I need one for the '74 but have not started the hunt yet.

What is most unfortunate about this is that the windshield isn't cracked or broken. The seal leaks, so I got a new one and was just getting that changed and while I was at it decided I should get the rock chips fixed (which were already there when I bought the car..!).

When the shop put the resin into one of the chips, this happened:

They don't want to touch the window any more for fear that it will break on them. Looks like there's some delamination between the glass and plastic. I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion from another glass shop otherwise this is about to get very expensive! I called around places here and it seems that W115 glass has been discontinued for the most part - there's nothing available Canada-wide!

Edit: It's not in my line of vision but it's a little unsightly and of course I'm still left with a leaking windshield and a new seal in a box

i recently had to replace the windshield in my W115 220d due to a bad crack.

the glass is no longer available and I had to source a used unit with no cracks but unfortunately a good amount of pitting.

Bit of an update:

Speedy Glass (Canadian wing of Safelite) managed to find a new windshield 4800km away in Quebec (I live in BC). They acknowledged that the glass had been discontinued and said it was probably the final one in the country as far as they knew. Pretty fortunate!

I dropped the car off yesterday morning. Went back after work and they were still working on it. They were having trouble with the chrome strip/gasket so had called in another guy from a different Speedy location to get it done. I don't drive the car every day so said I was happy to pick it up today instead (which they were relieved to hear).

So, by the end of the day today I should have a shiny new windshield installed! The old one (which I'm pretty sure was the original) was thoroughly chipped up from 45 years of driving, so looking forward to seeing how the visibility is compared. Also, I'm incredibly impressed with Speedy's service. Friendly, professional, going the extra mile for me - and they do the whole thing at their 'package price', so the fact that it will have basically taken two days to install doesn't affect my wallet

Also pleased to see that there was no rust around the frame itself, and one of the techs added some oil based coating to where the new glass is to be installed to protect it further.

Moral of the story: if you're having trouble finding some glass for one of these, book something with Speedy/Safelite and see what they can do. They scoured Canada until they found this one for me, shipped it in at no extra cost and offered to pay for a taxi home for me when I said I could pick up the car another day. Incredibly nice!

Will post more photos once I pick the car up

I have had a lot of luck with Satellite. I am no stranger to replacing glass but as I get older everything is getting tougher so more is being 'outsourced' than I would like. But I don't have a choice.

They not only have fair prices but the honesty is worth what the glass costs. They are upfront about costs, what can go wrong, and even the feasibility of the project.

Their entire open and honest approach must be a company wide thing.

Well I'm pretty happy:

First time since owning the car that I've not had water leaking through the corner of the seal after a torrential downpour!

I've not refitted the gutter rail trim yet but once that's done (probably over the weekend) I'll post a couple of photos.

I have to say: the new glass makes a massive difference - it's so insanely clear that you can barely see there's anything there!

... and yes I need to clean my dash

Last thing about Safelite, you have to bring car in and you have to buy the glass from them. I was having trouble as well so I was sending feelers out all over town. I was able to get a local one (not sure where they got it) and same day Safelite called me back saying they had one shipped an on the way as well. Picked up both (I have two ~70's w114 250's).

Few months later, bought the seal and called Safelite and asked them for a quote on installation...they said they don't install (must buy glass from them and then they will install).

Oh that's much different from Canada... here, Speedy Glass/Safelite do everything for you. I just booked a package appointment on their website (you select vehicle then glass, install, everything is quoted up-front and price is guaranteed). They then called me back (as W115 glass isn't exactly common!) to confirm that they'd do their best to source the glass for me, called again to confirm and took care of the rest. Zero legwork from me!
