I had a 1975 230 with the Stromberg sidedraft and the California emissions. I lived in Texas at the time and the car was grandfathered in to just needing to pass Texas emissions. The California stuff didn't need to be there.
So I just took the belt off the smog pump. And that was all I did. Because it had frozen up and needed to be replaced. I didn't plug off anything else. I did have to do a bit of tweaking to the carb which, with a sidedraft, is very easy. I didn't notice any difference in, well, anything. And all I did was to remove the smog pump drive belt. |

Why go to the trouble to exchange the original rod actuated pump for a hard-to-find cam driven pump? In the end, they are both mechanical fuel pumps. To eliminate the smog system you can either remove the smog pump or simply remove the associated belt. If there is an EGR valve, that can be taken out of the system by removing its vacuum lines and plugged where necessary. If the catalytic converter is still on, it must be removed as well. If not, it could easily become plugged without the smog pump, which, of course, would ruin the entire experience.
