Question 1976 240D water pump "welded on to housing"

Howdy all!

Any thoughts covering the separation of the water pump from the housing. Housing and pump are off of the motor. All bolts are out, I've been soaking the seam between pump and housing with penetrating oil. Replacing pump so I don't mind damaging the old one. Took some sharp raps with 12 and 36oz ball-peen hammers; should I just keep beating away? Is there anything in applying heat; thinking about soaking in boiling water, or should I apply a bit of flame at the seam?

Any thoughts are very much appreciated.

Thank you.

John

I suggest a wide chisel and favor the engine side.

It sounds like you are being patient, that is key to not breaking the housing. Try to remove any gasket material you can from the edges with a pick or razor blade. Then try soaking it in boiling water as you mentioned. I think it will be ok up to about 250F. The aluminum housing will expand more than the iron pump and the hot water should soften the gasket.

Good luck!!!

sounds like the iron pump is corroded. Heat the pump body with a torch. Go for red-hot.

Does the pump turn? the impeller might well be rusted into place. Thermal cycling might help free it.

Thumbs up Thanks to all of you

I appreciate the feed back, I will try everything suggested and hope for that magic combo...

(The pump is OK, just changing original parts out now that I got the AC bracket off. Project started as a replace the power steering pump job.)

Thanks again for the input, really helpful!

Got the pump off, thanks for the input. Trimmed the exposed gasket down to a minimum, sprayed penetrating oil, soaked overnight, soaked in 220 degree water for 30 minutes, started tapping the pump side with a hammer, the pump separated from the housing.
Looks like the issue was sealant from a previous replacement on the inside lip of the pump/housing space (inside the normal zone that the gasket would cover). Thanks again to all of you.

And now you know why the use of a gasket cement is NOT recommended. They probably used something such as Indian Head Gasket Shellac or its ilk.
