idle stumbles and dies
what's up guys...my 1982 300D turbo developed a weird idle when hot.....the idle becomes erratic to the point where it sometimes will cut the engine off....starts/idles fine when cold...I'm familiar with these cars and have seen engines idle a little rough when hot especially when hot or coming to a stop from a highway drive but nothing like this where engine will cut off at times.....planning on doing fuel filters, valve adjust, diesel purge, new injectors...anything I'm missing or suggestions? Thanks.

Tight Valve clearances would get tighter when the engine is hot. So yes to a valve adjustment. If the Fuel Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve Spring is compressed is it not going to hold the presser well and hot Diesel Fuel is thinner and therefore less pressure. The same with the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump going south. I had an issue but small one where Air was getting into the Fuel on the inlet side of the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump. When it got hot under the hood the hard inelastic old hose that I had tightened down the clamp on was not sealing because the plastic filter was evidently warping in the heat an causing a air leak. Changing to a new hose fixed the issue. If it has a Turbo you have a Rack Damper/Governor Idle Pin. Try backing that off and adjusting your idle speed with the idle speed screw and then adjust the Rack Damper/Governor Idle Pin. You don't want your idle speed riding on the Rack Damper/Governor Idle Pin or being adjusted by the Rack Damper/Governor Idle Pin. When you have the rough idle issue remove the Fuel Fill Cap and see if that changes anything. If it does there is an issue with your Tank Vent. One side of the Vacuum Shutoff on your Fuel Injection Pump is exposed to the crankcase pressure. If your crankcase pressure is high it pushes the shut off valve in the shutoff direction. When you are experiencing the rough idle remove the Oil Fill Cap. If that improves the issue it is your crankcase pressure causing the issue (clean the crankcase vent). While you are having the rough idle remove the Hose at the Vacuum Shutoff Valve on the Fuel Injection Pump. If that fixes the issue for some reason you are getting vacuum there when you are not supposed to. That is all I can think of right off.
