Jedi knowledge of the details of the paint overspray and QC of MB
So there are several of you on this forum that have tremendous knowledge concerning MB. One of the things I'm interested in is, how you do know where QC marks and where MB over sprayed sections coming off the assembly line? Is there a website? Have QC manual some where stashed away? Using the Force to get the answers? What is your secret?!
I'm asking as i'm trying to a 100% complete restoration on mine. Thanks |

If you live in Southern California, a trip to the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine would be worth your time. The Classic Center does beautiful/accurate restorations of classic Mercedes. There address is: 9 Whatney Place, Irvine.

B,
I don't live in Southern California so unfortunately (or fortunately for my marriage and checkbook) i can't visit the MCC. Bought from them and were helpful but i would be scared to go there and see it. |

Not that I am aware of but this would be a good place to start one.
I have seen books on Porsche restoration that go into great detail but I don't know about QC marks. I can say I have never bothered to look for them although they must have existed. I used to do a lot of FIATs and QC marks were all over them if you knew where to look. (I know it sounds odd... FIAT and quality in the same sentence.) What type of Mercedes are you working on? I hope to be tearing apart a 1956 Ponton I just picked up so I could pay attention to such marks. But this will not be for a few months. I have noticed on some 111s and 115 bits of writing that had to have been placed there by assembly workers. These would not be QC stamps as they are written with a marker pen or paint. So perhaps the QC people didn't stamp their work but signed it? |

I like to study photos of cars from auction websites like BAT. Some have pretty detailed underbody pictures.

I have a blue mark on the rear end over the drain plug that is still there. There is another mark/strip across a spot in the engine compartment (It escapes my memory what it's called at this moment). It had a little over 79k miles on it before the Odometer broke. I have less than a 1k miles on it since i bought it. So...not sure what to do there once i get it fixed. Curious..Bits of writing? |

Do you have a budget? Restoration can get pretty expensive. Do you want to drive the car or show it?

Tony H,
Yep i know it IS expensive. Trying to do what I can on my end and essentially have them do the bodywork/ painting, some of the interior (seats/headliner), rubber seals (the windshield and rear window), engine, and tranny. I suspect $24k. Engine is in good shape except for front crankshaft seal. Tranny needs a little work. Body has rusted rockers and front fender rust around the lights but that's about it. i've knocked around floor pans, trunk, rear fenders and doors (i've been in side and out them -door motor work) and are solid. Roof's good and cowling area too. But you never know until you start taking of the paint. |
