Question opinions please on classifying my 1972 C114... :)

Hi everyone,

I acquired a 1972(?) 114 Coupe several weeks ago and put in about 370 miles on it. I'd like to ask anyone's opinion on how I should classify this. Numbers say it was a German made 250C with auto trans. But... when I got it, the engine was already changed to 220 (2.2 L 115.92x) . Trans was already converted to Manual Trans as well. I dont think its underpowered though the smaller engine as it can handle steep grades in 2nd gear and outruns some much younger cars. BTW, the engine was partially rebuilt less than 10K miles ago(according to PO. partially rebuilt :
head was trued at machine shop, 8 new valves, rebuilt water guide, new head gasket, valve adjust etc). some leaks now though but I still get around 24 mpg.

So... since I cannot call it a 250C because of the engine swap, what is the next best politically correct way to classify it....
will it be a "114 Coupe", "220C" no such thing but there is a C220 , a C114, etc....?,
Your opinions please...

Thanks

Mark

Sounds like a neat car. IMHO, call it a 220C here so we don't start giving advice for the M130 engine.

Thanks Chuck!

I think your fuelconsumtion is a bit high.
I get about 36 km to the gallon with a 200 engine .
So I think you could do better then 14 km/g with some finetuning.

Good luck

To follow the older conventions, you'd be driving a 250C 2.2
The 2.2 part would appear on the other side of the trunk from the 250C (just like a 300SEL 3.5 or a 190E 2.6).

You can actually order a "2.2" badge. Tell whomever you order it from that your car is a 1986 190D 2.2 (201.122 model). It shouldn't be more than 20$.

thanks

Hello

René,

The car gets 15Mpg or 24 KM/G or 6KM/liter.

In fine tuning , I guess you mean:
1. Change drivetrain fluids to all specified fluids (Type A ATF for manual tranny, SAE 90 Gear Oil for Differential)
2. Change plugs, plug wires, points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, ignition coil,
3. Repack wheel bearings and ensure that brakes do not bind
4. Clean/O/haul Stromberg carb

Johan01 gave the valuable info listed above. Please feel free to add to it so I can get near your 36KM/Gal consumption. Do you get 9Km/liter mixed and with A/C on? Does your 200 come with twin Solex or a Stromberg. Is it a 115 Engine?

CTH,

I appreciate your thoughts on the old naming convention.

I hope this shows up:

heh, looks like the seatback to me

tight lil car though (shouldn't call it little.. these "E-Class" coupés ain't small)

I like the yellow fogs and the Euro lights. Then again those lights are standard everywhere else...
