Power brakes
Hi,
I’ve restored this 79 w123 coupe diesel and what I’ve noticed is that brakes randomly loose the power, they become hard like they loose vacuum. It’s really random and I can’t say it’s because something I do. I was wondering if someone can guide me to what to check first and if can share the vacuum schematics of this car which I’m sure are messed up. Thank you |

Either the brake booster, the check valve in the line to the booster or the vacuum pump. I'd start by t-ing a vacuum gauge into the booster line to see if it loses or retains vacuum to the booster when the power assist is lost.
Good luck!!!

Your hose from the vacuum pump to the booster might have a crack or small hole in it. If so this could cause you to lose vacuum at random times, such as when the hose is flexed to allow air to enter the system.
You will need a vacuum tester to check this because you need to see if the tester can not only pull a vacuum but if the item being tested can hold a vacuum. A pin hole would allow a vacuum to be pulled, but the gauge on the tester would slowly fall, and sometimes very slowly, if there is a leak. I usually let a pulled vacuum stand for about an hour before known that it is good. |

Unscrew the check valve that screws into the Vacuum pump and see if it is funked up or the parts are missing.
In side of the Vacuum Pump is also disc valves that can get gunked up.
