722.1 dipstick reading

Has anyone ever seen a MB publication, listing the number of pts / mls between max/min on the 722.1 transmission dipstick? Of course we all figure it out by trail and error, but it would be nice to know exactly. Answers greatly appreciated

Someone might have a used dipstick they would sell or get one at the junk yard.

I am not sure if the Factor Service Manual list the amount of ATF during a filter change but there is a Mercedes Technical manual that might have that.

Also some people drain their Torque Converter (which is something I have never bothered with on any vehicle) and that would likely not be included in the filter change specs.

As long as the TC has a drain plug, to not drain it is like changing engine oil w/o changing the filter. Anyway, I don't need a dipstick. The space between max/min can't possibly be more than a quart and mostly less than that - I would just like to know what the exact amount is, if there is such a thing.

Most US Cars I owned had no such drain plug on the torque converter. I have read where there is instructions on how to drill out and tap them if you want to do that.

Acording to the tech manual on a 617.952 there is a whole 1 liter difference in the amount of Oil that goes into an new engine that has never had oil in it and and Engine you are doing an oil and filter change on.
That means when you do an oil change on a 617.952 there is one liter of dirty oil left inside of the engine and oil cooler system.

I rebuilt the auto transmission on my Van but I have never owned a Car that had transmission issues like the 84 300D has had.
The other Cars expired for other reasons then transmission issues. Reusing the fluid in the torque convert posses no issues as long as the fluid did not come to some grief like being overheated or gets coolant in it.

However, to each his own.

I'd say somewhere around 250 - 300 ml. It's definitely not a liter. I have a small funnel that will just fit into the dipstick tube and I fill it twice to go from add to full.

Most oil dipsticks read one liter low when they're at the add line. Easy to make that mistake on a Benz transmission and end up overfilled.

I agree with all that you say. I too have that same size funnel - good to know about the relation of its size to amount of fluid. Thanks
