W108 heater sliders help needed

i could sure use a little help understanding how the heater slider switches work in my 1973 280SEL 4.5. I figured out the obvious, like the car heats up when the sliders are moved to the red triangular position, and defrost supposedly shoots air up to the windshield, but without a heater blower fan (it's inoperable) I can't be sure how things are supposed to work. Can someone with similar vehicle explain? I've attached a photograph. Thanks much. By the way, I've owned the car for 13 years but have driven it only sparingly in that time. thank you.

See the "Defrost" thing? That shows how to get max defrost - max heat, max fan, all air blowing up.

Top left = fan speed, all the way left = fastest
Bottom left = Driver's heat, all the way left = valve and flap fully open
Top right = Air flow, all the way right = down, all the way left = up
Bottom right = Passenger heat, all the way right = valve and flap fully open

Spin it by hand and then try to turn it on, maybe you'll get lucky and it's just blocked with leaves or something

thanks, will try that - the car was sitting for a long time, including a spell outside for a while, so perhaps I will find something simple. just have to ask, however, is the motor accessible from under the hood or will i have to go through hoops to just try to spin it?

You may need to pull the cowl guard but then you should be able to get a visual and a wire coat hanger down in there to spin it.
