weird metal plate
please help me identify the name and purpose of this small metal plate i found in my book of materials associated with my 1973 280SEL. It has some numbers and the name of the original owner stamped on it. i see a paint code there, vin and engine number and some other numbers. I do have the data card which is a heavy stock card (paper) but not sure about this metal plate. any help is appreciated.

These things were of a standard size and position of information so they could use the same imprint machine as credit cards used.
GM even copyrighted a name for them: Protectroplate. This soon became a generic term no matter what other dealers called them. I bought a 1971 6.3 back in 1996 and wrote to them to see if I could get a new plate. Nope. Mercedes didn't say when but they sent me a nice letter saying they retired their use 'many years ago'. I would consider this a nice touch to the original car. Many of these rusted away since they were not built for the long term. |
