Cooling Fan Shroud Installation on W108

Hi, I bought my 1972 280SEL 4.5 without a fan shroud. I purchased one and wondered best approach to install? Thinking I remove the fan to install. Are the bolts holding the fan on reverse thread or regular? Is there a better option to removing the fan to install the shroud? Thanks again for any input. This forum is great. John

Fan bolts shouldn't be reverse thread, I'm 99.99% on this. Send me the other .01% after you do the job. Yes, start with removing the fan. You may also need to pull the upper hose. Go slowly and gently work all fittings vs using force.

Good luck!!!

The four bolts holding the fan are easily removed if you have a pair of 10mm box end wrenches. Use one to keep the assembly from rotating while you loosen another. Eventually you'll slightly retighten one by doing that, but it will be easy to remove it.

After you've got them loose, remove all four.

make sure the shroud retaining bolts are the correct length (relatively short) or they well
Hit the Cooling fins and create a water leak (mostly bottom bolts)
