67 250s front spring removal

Hi,

Has anyone followed the manuals instructions on how to remove the w108 front springs?

There is no room for either internal or external spring compressors.

Seems crazy to do it with just a jack as the manual suggests. It says to place jack under the lower control arm, remove the bolts from holding guide pin to crossmember, then lower.

The reason I am doing this is to change the motor mount. The passenger one has the lifting plate on it and you can't get to the bolt unless the spring is removed.

Really a horrible design access wise.

I have done it that way but it scared the he__ out of me. Later I thought of using some kind of restraint system with 2 threaded rods slowly loosed as the spring decompresses. I was concerned the jack would flip over and let the spring fly out. A jack/spring in the face would not be good. I never put the springs back in since I am converting the car to air suspension.

I confused about what you are doing. What is the "lifting plate"

Just remove the 2 center bolts and the 2 small ones, jack the engine up a bit and pull the motor mount out.

BTW the jack method works fine for removing the spring.

I have removed many a motor mount and never had to mess with springs, So I am confused as well. And BTW - dont mess with the spring without the proper tools ( there are specific tools for this) if it gets away it will go through anything in its path , including humans

Im an idiot - all my years of Porsche ownership I guess...

I just didn't jack the motor up enough. And saw the bolt underneath the mount. I lifted the motor more and the mount came out.

I then add the "lifting plate" and bolt from old mount to new, and popped back in.

The mounts may have been original and were completely flat and separated. Glad I did it.

GLad you got it without having to remove the spring!

That being said, for the actual spring removal, I used a floor jack in a gravel driveway, and I didn't have any issues. I did it to replace a busted lower control arm, so it was only halfway in and I still managed to get it out without a problem. I jacked the car up by the LCA to start with, got the unibody on a few 8x10 "Railroad ties", and then after removing the wheel and the bolts for the LCA and kingpin/knuckle assembly, slowly lowered the LCA from the side "In case" the spring shot out. It didn't. I was more afraid when re-attaching than during removal, but still didn't have issues.

the lifting plate on the motor mount should be a flat steel plate. It's not very thick.

As for removing the spring. I had a piece of angle iron welded to a round bar stock that I notched to hold the angle iron. The result is a new saddle for my old jack that holds the bar as you lower it. To use it, I have to remove the normal saddle from the jack.
