Die Braune Sau - 1972 W108 280SE 4.5

I found this car on Facebook; a customer gave up and surrendered the car to his mechanic. The customer was driving it up until 2021, when the injectors started to stick open and flood the cylinders with fuel. The car had sat in their lot for about a year and the owner wanted it out of there ASAP.

I offered $250 and the owner accepted. I honestly spent more money on gas and a trailer rental than the car itself.

Overall, not a bad buy for $250, but it definitely has some outstanding needs. Not rusty where you would expect it to be, but there is certainly rust on the floors, passenger side inner fender, and the little butt cheeks in the rear of the trunk area. The previous owner definitely spent money on redoing the rockers and doors, I can tell it has fresh metal and was actually painted a shade of metallic brown that isn't too far off from the original single stage brown. At some point, the car was rear ended and it has extensive filler in back; this repair was done very poorly.

Mechanically, the right rear brake hose burst when I unloaded it off the flatbed and on to my trailer. The injectors were replaced recently, but the mechanic believes a wiring issue is causing them to stay open. One of the spark plug boots is melted, and several sensor wires are broken or disconnected.

The interior is pretty toasty from being left outside. When it was parked, both front windows were left open, so the wood around the windows has completely delaminated and fallen apart.

My current goal is just to get this thing running again and see how far I want to take it. I have been quietly on the hunt for a W108 since I own a W111 and W116, I thought it would be cool to have three generations of Sonderklasse, but I didn't think I would find one as unique as a 4.5. I would have preferred to find one with more options, especially a sunroof, but I am not too bummed about it considering the price of admission.
