Troubleshooting dead Becker Europa II on a 1976 W115 300D -- any ideas?
The radio in my 300D stopped working at some point last year, I forget when. I think this happened after either one of two times when during an emergency I brought it to shops that had no business working on something that German and that old. My guess is that one of them did something stupid and broke the radio.
My regular mechanic says there's power coming to the radio leads. So is there an internal fuse on the Europa II, or is the thing probably just blown up? I pulled the unit and there wasn't anything obvious on the rear that read "fuse" or looked like it held a fuse or something. |

Becker AutoSound LLC in Saddle Brook NJ fixes them, perhaps they would answer your question.

Confirm power to it and a good ground. Does it have an external ground tab on the back?

These ground through the radio antenna. All radios of that era did.
There is a bolt on the back that a dedicated ground wire is usually attached to. This would be a brown wire with an eye type connection on it. A 10 mm nut screws down on the bolt. I only mention this because I have found on some of the later cars, like the 1976s, this brown wire is not hooked up. I don't know if this was a decision from the factory or if a past owner just didn't want to hook it back up. Also... During that time a lot of these radios were installed at the dealership where cutting corners could've been encouraged. The problem with the antenna ground is the plug gets a bit of resistance built up on it over the years. When these cars were sold no one expected them to still be on the road fifty years later. So you might try just cleaning the plug end of the antenna or hooking up the ground wire. Repairs are usually never that simple. But I always try the easy stuff first. |
