Electric fuel pump for 1963 220SEb Cabriolet

I've owned this car for 40 years and I bought it from the original owner. It has just over 30K original miles..It is pretty close to perfect.
The fuel supply pump has recently quit....[not the injection pump]
This pump is an electric one mounted back by the tank. Replacement pumps are hard to find and extremely expensive if you do find one...I am trying to locate a modern universal pump that will supply the right volume and pressure to make this car run again properly. Any experience that one of you might have about this problem will be deeply appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron........in Paso Robles, Calif.

Hi Ron. I'm in SLO.

Regarding the electric pump. Make sure the fuse that powers it, located in the fuse holder on the fire wall, hasn't either blown, or developed a layer of corrosion at it's metal ends, that is keeping current from flowing. Corrosion on the fuses, even light, is an issue. Sometimes, as a quick fix, you can simply place your index finger on a fuse, and sort of spin it back and forth, and that will cause the ends of the fuse to sort of scrape through the corrosion, and power will be restored. Not a permanent fix, but a helpful diagnostic "get you going" tool. Ultimately, you either clean the ends of the fuses, or replace them with new, and clean the metal contacts. When doing this job, coat the ends of the fuses with dielectric grease or carbon paste.

Regarding the fuel pump, yours is very rebuildable. That would be my first choice, after doing a voltage test, and confirming that I did have 12v going to it, with the key on, at the 2 terminals on the pump. Kits are available, usually on ebay.

There is a screen inside the inlet fitting on the pump, where the hose from the fuel tank connects. It's not uncommon for this screen to get packed solid with debris, so the pump runs, but can't get fuel from the tank, even though the pump is gravity fed.

If the car has been sitting unused for a long time, there's a chance that the metal pump vane in the very base of the pump, has become stuck in the corrosion that is created by our modern ethanol based fuel. This will blow the fuse. If this were the case, and it would be something I'd check for, the base of the pump can be removed, and the base and vane cleaned up. Then the pump will be fine again. New vanes are available if the vane is damaged. The base screws can get seized badly, so a lot of care needs to be taken with attempting to loosen them!!

I've seen pictures of people using standard Bosch fuel injection pumps, hung under the cars. The mechanical injection pump creates it's own pressure, so all you need is to deliver fuel to it. The fuel damper near the mechanical injection pump remains open to fuel flow at all times, so excess fuel is always sent back to the fuel tank. I believe the factory fuel flow rate, from the original electric pump, is: 1 quart in 15 seconds

Thanks Todd.....

I really appreciate your advice. I have been told by Pelican Parts that there were no pumps or kits available. I will take your advice and get under the car and take out the pump for inspection and cleaning. Yes it has been parked for way too long. I used to be religious about starting it and driving it for a short trip every month or so. Now I have so many cars and motorcycles that it is difficult to get one from a back row out.........that and I have been finishing a restoration on my '54 220 Cab A.....that I have been working on for many years.
I am hoping for a clog from the alcohol or other debris in the fuel. I have already checked the fuse and it is fine. I have not checked the power to the pump however.
I live out west of Paso on Vineyard Drive.
Thanks so much.
Ron

There are a lot of things can provide and then there are the things they can't.

When one source says "no" ask here about other sources. One of us will know something.

This is the kit contains a custom made lock washer, in case the one in the pump has failed. This little piece is NLA from any source, as is the bronze bellows style pump shaft seal "assembly." (which, of course, is not in any kits, including this one.)
