70 Benz 280 SE 2.8 Camshaft removal

Hello Forum :

2.8 Camshaft removal 1970 Mercedes SE

I see the 1970 SE 6 Cylinder Cam towers are different then the earlier W108 motor > I am used to ? those ( 66 / 67 / 250 S type ) just unbolt and lift off

>> 1970 Mercedes SE 2.8 Motor Cam Towers >

(1) do they come off ?

I want to remove the Camshaft but it seems the Towers don't want to lift off

(2) Exactly how do You remove the camshaft ?
The Head is off and the Camshaft itself is bad with 1 Lobe 1/2 way Flat

Problem Solved : Cam is Off

The answer should be...
Undo the little bolts at the base of each cam. Then knock the pedestals on the side with a rubber mallet as they are sitting on a pin that's going to hold them in place. If they are sitting on shims, that's to account for warp in the head and the machining done after.

Be very careful swapping around cam shaft pedestals from one vintage motor to another. They have different heights from the head surface. The most noticeable being from a 1968 280SE to some other M130E motor. They are a full 1mm taller. The cure for that is use different thickness spacers between the rocker arm and the valve spring. I found that one out the hard way one afternoon when I gave a '68 car a new camshaft.

On a related note; if you have a cam with a flat lobe or lobes, you likely have a clogged hole(s) in the oiling tube that runs just above the camshaft. These tubes get crusted over with black carbon crud, from old engine oil, and then will either stop dripping in a certain location, or barely drip......which equals the death of the cam.
