HELP 1968 w115 rattling engine noise !?!?!?!
The engine of my 1968 w115 200 has suddenly evolved a strange noise. It first occured after an oilchange I used the dealer specified oil.It occurs only when idling ans it seems to come from the valve/timingchain area .
I checked valve clearance and this looks 100% ok to me . I had a visual inspectian of the tiningchain , it is in a high shinning condition and the tentioner seens to do it's work. The noise sometimes isn't there for more then a week and then it is there again. At speed the car is absolutely great great torgue, and not a trace of the noise. Before I take it to the shop and send them on a for me expensive noise hunt I turn to you experts for your advice. Anyone a clue ??? |

Sounds like your chain tensioner is weak, and allows the chain to rattle when cold and first started. The reason it appeared suddenly is that the new oil is lower viscosity cold than the stuff you took out.
A rebuild kit is available, it has a couple o-rings and a seal, or you can just replace the tensioner. You can check it by removing the valve cover on a cold engine and pushing the tensioner rail (passenger side) back. If it moves fairly easily, the tensioner isn't holding oil anymore and the chain will rattle. Peter

I agree that it is probably the tensioner. You didn't say what weight oil you are using, but you might try the next-heavier weight and see if that helps.
I say this because it is a fair amount of trouble to remove the tensioner, especially if your car has AC. If you do rebuild or replace it, be sure to replace the o-ring that goes between the tensioner body and the engine. These get hard and leak like a Dutch dike. :-)

Thanks for the replies guys.
Is this an easy DIY job or are special tools and knowledge needed ? |

It is straighforward, but a lot of work if you have AC.
You need a 27mm socket to take the tensioner out (and tighten it).

I had this problem too when I tried to use a thinner oil for my W123.
A quick fix to this, which worked for me, was to dunk two cans of STP Engine Oil treatment into it. The sound went away, and I switched back to dino oil on my next oilchange. |
