Injector leaking : Where do I begin?

Facts: 1972 300sel 4.5. Leak at the injector on the drivers side nearest the fire wall. Injectors are 1.5 yrs. old. It is not the rubber hose. Questions: Can the injector be loose? How do I tighten it? Someone suggested that the car is running so rich that the leak is actually overflow. I have the cd rom, but due to my low IQ.+ lack of computer knowledge, I can't find the info! Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise, I will have to tow it to Sugarhill, Ga. and let Auotwerks fix it! I wish they were closer.

Clunker:

The injector is held down by a "fork" with a single screw into the manifold. You can tighten this if loose -- 10 mm, I think. Have a care, the manifold is aluminum.

Make very sure the injector body is actually cracked and leaking. I'd suspect the hose or the pressure ring first rather than the injector, although they DO leak (my sister sold her 1973 VW Fastback because of leaking injectors).

There are two seals -- one in the mainfold (small mushroom like thing, fits on the nozzle) and one on the body, held on by a circlip.

How much fuel do you have there? A leaking seal will slow very little leakage -- mostly cause trouble from air leaks into the manifold instead.

You can replace a single injector. They are about $75 each, I think (may be more) -- you will have to remove the fuel line (careful, it stays pressurized), then take all the injectors on one side out along with the rail after unplugging them. Loosen the hose clamps, take injector off, put new injector on, then reverse process. Not hard, better (and cheaper) than a tow....!

Thanks, Peter.
I've ordered the seals. I hope that solves the problem!

If the system is the same on the 72 300sel as it is on the 72 280se 4.5, it is highly unlikely that the seals are to blame for any visible fuel leakage as the seals are over a hole. It is more likely the fuel line clamp is just loose enough to allow fuel to seep down over the injector. I just had the same problem when I renewed the seals and with a slight twist of the screwdriver my problems were... well not over, it is an old mercedes after all...but no more fuel leak!

It is leaking at the bottom of the turqoise injector/top of the large rubber seal: between those two. Make sense? It leaks as soon as you turn the key to the on position.

Injector -- if it leaks as soon as you turn the key on, it leaks all the time and cannot be a bad seal.

Totally agree, the injector is toast. Anyone know if more modern fuel rails on a modern MB v-8 are spaced correctly so I could use the newer "plug
in " variety of injectors on a 108?

Spacing should be the same, the block is the same except that it is aluminum, but the heads and manifold are different. Who knows, you will have to measure, I suppose.
