108 4.5 transmission: 3 or 4 speed?
I am in the market for a 108 chassis V8 280SE/L- the best cars ever made, in my opinion. I owned a 1970 6-cyl. that had a 4spd auto. I know the 116 chassis 4.5 S-class used a 3-spd auto, but I have always assumed that the end of the run V8 108's used the earlier 4 spd transmissions. Am I correct? If I am not mistaken, the early 4 spds usually start in 2nd gear, and so act, for all intents and purposes, like a 3 spd, unless you use the kickdown switch. Any thoughts?

My book 'Mercedes Benz Production Cars - 1946-1975' by Robert Nitske lists the US market 108 body 280SEL as having 3 speed automatics, 4 speed outside the US. Total production is listed at 8173 units between 1971-72.
Happy Motoring, Mark

The 6-cyl has 4 gears IIRC, and the 8 has 3 gears.

Definitely a three speed, with torque converter, not the fluid coupling on most of the four speeds.
Very good tranny by the way. Peter

makes sense
Thanks. I figured the V8's used the 3 spd that was then used in the 116 chassis with the same V8 (or at least one similar). Makes sense that with the power of the V8, the 4spd was rather superfluous (and probably couldn't handle the power...

still more
That makes sense with the tick marks on the speedometer-
1st is good thru about 60mph, 2nd for 90mph, then it tops out in third, correct? At what, about 120mph...? |

Owner's manual says 124 mph top speed, but if you take the rev limiter rotor out and put the "straight" one in, speeds of up to 150 mph have been seen.
The version of the M117 used in the W108 was used in the W116 til 76, when it was changed from D-Jetronic to K-Jetronic -- different heads and cams. Peter
