I daily drove a '73 220D with a 240 engine in it for years and loved it. I also had a W123 300CD for a while and liked it too, but I really prefer the earlier cars. I think the W114/W115 handles better than a W123, maybe not according to the "numbers" but they feel better to me, and visibility out of the car is much better.
W114/W115 cars had a bunch of firsts for Benz, like a center console, ball joints in the front end, and the freshly designed rear suspension subframe that was used in all Benz cars for a while after that. And the old school body build is much more satisfying to me than the later cars. The W114/W115 is a great combo of new and old - love 'em.

I've daily driven W123's, and my 114 was a semi-daily driver despite being a POS. If you have or make an actual good one then dailying it shouldn't be too big of a deal provided you have alternate transport for when it's down for maintenance. I would prefer a diesel for the fuel economy. My 114 with the M130 got about 15 mpg.

My 1st Mercedes was a 73 280 sedan and it was a DD all through the 80's and early 90's. Only had 2 complaints: #1. The M110 was carbureted, so there were intermittent float problems.
Complaint # 2 involved the wife: Car was a Light Ivory beauty with near perfect blue leather interior, had the optional, early style, white steering wheel and rich Zebrano wood. I loaned it to her to do maintenance on her Audi, and she kept it! Says "it's much to nice for a guy". So be warned, if you find a nice one, be sure the wife already has a classier ride. Don

I do about 30,000 to 35,000 miles per year in my 220D, a W115, and it has had minimal problems so far. Nice, comfortable, reliable cars to drive.
