Leaking oil cooler

Hello,

As suggested by the title of this thread, the oil cooler from my 220D has sprung a leak.

That would be the thing that looks like a radiator only a sixth of it's width and full of oil, it resides next to the radiator and did do a wonderfull job.

I happen to know that secondhand replacements are hard to come by, I don't know if I can get one new.

My plan was to bypass it for the meantime, it is winter afterall, then take the thing off clean it up and see if I can solder it.

Question, are there any additives that I could add to the oil that might sort this one out, teflon or an egg or something?

Also, any unforeseen problem that would arise from the bypass operation?

I would NOT recommend any additives to your oil.
As for the bypass, I don't know how hot the 220D gets, but even if it were winter I would not bypass the one on my 4.5.
As for soldering it, read my thread about my radiator

A good radiator shop can fix it if you can't. Most likely it has cracked or has a corrosion hole in it, but it is brass and copper like the rad.

If you take it out, I think that you have to remove the thermostatically controlled bypass valve in the oil filter housing. Otherwise you get no oil to the bearings when you hit the temperature that would send oil to the filter.

There are warnings about this on the M110 and M130 engines. At least check it out before you try it.
