Front bar on the bumper

I've looked at quite a few 108 pics online. And out of all that I've seen, none have the bar on the front that mine does. It is attatched to the (bottom of the) bumper near the front license plate cutout and comes up in front of the grill (it's one bar that looks like it's there to pick the car up by).
Does anyone else's have this or is it an aftermarket special?

I have seen a few cars online with these.. I figured they were to keep the grill from getting crushed in a minor accident ..seeing as how fragile the grill is they tend to get smahed easily.

It is a grill guard and was an option. I've attached a link to another website with a picture of one. The link is for 300SEL 6.3 options, but many of the options will apply to your car as well.

MY 1972 280se has that same bar that bolts to the bumper where the bumper bolts to the body. It is to protect the grill. My 1972 300sel has 2 bumperettes with a bar that connects the two and protects the grill. If you were an ambassador or potentate you could hang your flags from it. I don't have the balls myself!! Unfortunatley, it is much cheaper to replace the grill than the bars.

JW,

What a fabulous site, thanks!

Never knew how many options there were...
It is interesting that some show up on my humble 1968 250S
