What did I break on my 1972 300SEL?

Today I noticed an oil drop underneath my car, so I checked it out. The oil was coming from a round thing that the lower oil cooler hose connects to. There are 6 bolts that hold this thing together. One bolt was so loose I could turn it with my fingers. I decided to get my ratchet set out and tighten all 6 of the bolts. Well, I tightened the second bolt so tight (stupid, I know!) that I cracked the cover and oil poured all over the garage. Does anyone know what this thing is? There is a number of R11618701965 on it, but I can't locate the part on parts websites by using that number. I would call a repair shop but they are all closed in my area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that is the oil cooler thermostat. I cannot imagine what else it could be.

Probably fairly fragile or already shot if tightening a bolt, however tight, fractured the case.

At any rate, you won't be driving it until you get a new part. If you cannot find it anywhere else, call Rusty or your local dealer.

Concur with Peter, sounds like the oil cooler thermostat. Try dropping the "R" and running the numbers only on a search in FastLane or PartsShop, to see if the part is available. If unable to locate, contact Phil at PartsShop he can likely source it for you.

Guessing about a $100.00 part????

Thanks Peter and Mike. Thanks to Phil I was able to get a correct part number. It is 116-180-12-94 and it is an oil damper. I wanted to order from Phil, (his price was much better!) but amazingly a local dealer had one in stock and I need to get this fixed ASAP.

Probably a thermostatic control for the oil flow through the cooler to prevent overcooling in cold weather.
