More Sins of the Infamous PO

So I am all set to put the refurbished head on. New valve seals, everything clean. New MERCEDES chain, upper rails, brass exhaust nuts all from the dealer because I need to buy something from them every so often.

Head goes on, bolts just snug. Start to take them to 30 nm. Get to the center bottom bolt and it just keeps turning. Clearly a stripped thread. Very bad news.

Pull the head back off and contemplate the prospect of a helicoil. Notice that only the top 5mm are stripped. Guess what? Someone in the past had used (four) 50mm bolts in the bottom row, when the proper length is 65mm! Guess I should have caught this, but it's not something you typically look for.

I debated a helicoil to repair the top 5mm in that one hole and decided to leave it since I would still have 15mm of thread holding the bolt, and that I could easily do more more harm than good with a drill and a helicoil. Then I bought four new 65 mm bolts and reinstalled the head with no problems.

So, when you're dealing with an engine that's been messed with, remember the immortal words of Captain Queeg in the Caine Mutiny: "You can't assume a goddamn thing [in the Navy]."

Way to go Chuck!

When I put my head on, and cinched down all my bolts to the proper torque, it was THEN I realized that I had left off the oiler tower...

Hmmm... what to do.

If I remove all the bolts, then I need a new gasket and have to re-do everything...

So I took the risk and just removed the required bolts (6 of them) and tightened them back up.

Seems to have worked! Whew so far.
