She was a beauty, just ain't sure WHAT she was!!

Saw an old Benz out on the road this afternoon. It was what I think to be a 108 body, verticle headlamps, something maybe late sixties, early seventies. Anyway it was burgandy and shining like a new penny even in the rain. The badging on the decklid said '300SEL' on the left and '4.5' on the right. Sound like something yall know about?

Only the most beautiful car ever made. Not that I have one - I just want one. My dream is to buy one and fully restore it. Oh, sorry, "it" is a 300sel, 109 chassis. This was the top of the line S class for the late 60's-early 70's. I think the only real difference from the 108 is that they all had air suspension. When it fails, the chassis sits about 3 inches off the ground. This is the body that they shoehorned an M-100 into to make the legendary 300 sel 6.3.

Here's a pic one in so-so condition that I just took from Ebay:

I was very impressed with this jewel. It was either completely restored or has lived a very sheltered life! Some lucky guy had just bought it cause it had a temporary license plate. Burgandy (maroon?) with tan interior. All the chrome was perfect. I was gonna try to pull the guy over and talk to him, but I think he thought I was tailgating him (trying to read the badging) and he tossed a plastic drink cup out the window and almost hit me!!

Was that the one in the shop? If it was, then for some reason this car looked smaller than that one, but forgive me, there was a LOT to look at up there that day!!

As you see everyone loves those cars, thats why if you need a fender, a good one costs 3500 USD. My friend has one, but its 3.5. Its pretty cool, its certainly a classic. If one is running good, it can certainly out perform a 560 SEC/SEL, my friends sure did. Hard car to keep up with.

I hope people will have more respect for those, instead of treating them like some junk.
