Question Coolant Recovery for 280 SE 4.5

I want to add a coolant recovery system to my 4.5. I have figured out the reservoir location, hoses, etc., but need advice on what type of radiator cap to use. Is there a later year cap, (mine is a 72) to use, or should I go to the aftermarket?

You won't need a different cap.

The overflow tube is under the cap.

Just extend the overflow hose into the new tank. As long as the overflow tank is not the pressurized type, you should always mount the tank lower than the radiator cap.

Ta Da!

After I converted my radiator to a modern hi efficiency 3 row core, I mounted an unpressurized stainless steel coolant recovery tank in front of my radiator with a 13 lb radiator cap. It works perfect on my 1963 220 SEb.

Way Cool Greg!

Did you make this tank yourself? Or is it a racing or aftermarket item?

The polished stainless steel coolant recovery is an aftermarket item available and seen in most car rod magazines. I've seen them in a variety of lengths, widths and styles. I just attached it to the already existing upright brace in front of the radiator, cut off a portion of the overflow brass tube running from the radiator cap down the side of the radiator frame and then inserted a suitable size hose from that point to the recovery tank. The cap is a screw on. There is no conflict when closing the hood.

Gregg,

what a lovely sight!! I love the polished rad and valve cover, and an interesting choice of color for the power steering...?

I have room for a plastic reservoir, so will go shopping for it in the PNP this weekend.
