If your interested in using a Weber as a replacement for the Solex 4A1, it can be bought thru Phil right here at mercedesshop.com. Give him a call for a price quote. Other dealers on the web can be found by doing a Google search for Weber Redline 38 DGAS. You'll find a bunch.
Now no doubt a DGAS is a feasable alternative to the Solex, I have a few questions on the swap. The 4A1 has a ported vacumm take-off on the left primary. This supplies vacuum to the vacuum booster which in turn supplies the EGR vacuum. How does the DGAS supply the ported vacuum to the EGR system? The rear of the Solex has a draw off for the fuel evaporation control system and crankcase breather. Does the DGAS allow a port for this? Without the above being connected I don't see how the emission system would function correctly or the engine operating as designed. Now that is of course if you want it to operate as designed. |

Gympie, you have hit me in one of my Achilles Heels.... I have no clues as to the vacuum system vis-a-vis its application to the 74 280 I have....If I could figure them out I would would not mind having them... but I have not figured out how to find the values the vacuum should present to the various things it usually has to control...
I prefer using a Magneto ( purely mechanical ) for power to the plugs on a gas engine... because ignitions systems are my other Achilles Heel ( Hell ?)..... The manufactures just don't provide enough information for a 25 or 30 year old car to be able to get all those systems to be working right ( in my opinion , or lack of research ability, or something ) Are you saying the adapter plate can be bought through Phil ? I would find an old Weber and recondition it just for the cost advantage... but would like to see one of the adapter plates which positions it where the original air cleaner can still be used... |

Here are a couple of pictures off the JAM website that should give you an idea of how the Weber conversion works.

Thanks Chuck,,,, I could make that adapter with a hacksaw and file... but more fun on my lathe and mill... that is much simpler than my 32/36 adapter for the Subaru...
LOL, the picture on their main site http://www.jameng.com/ shows a 1957 Mercury... The car I grew up with ... the convertible that year, with a continental kit was the Pace car at Indy.. We bought one new when I was seven and kept it until I was 45.... ours had more chrome that that one , as you can tell by the underside of the chrome strip heading back from the headlight... ours had chrome under there also...Back in the old days of separate polish,Simoniz cleaner, Simoniz paste wax, chrome cleaner, Chrome polish..... I once spent 13 hours straight getting it ready for a date...all hand rubbing... Last edited by leathermang; 01-19-2003 at 02:57 PM. |
