'76 240D Pull Start AAAHHHHHHHHHH!

So I have a '76 240D that has had two sets of glow plugs and resistors changed out on it including getting a new pull start installed and yet it is still a hard start, particularly when hot. Anyone? My '77 240D has on-dash glow indicators gratefully.

You should post this on the diesel forum - those guys will be all over it.

I'm no expert, but something other than glow plugs is going on if you are having trouble with hot starting.

Check for leaks in the fuel lines -- air in the injection pump can cause hard starts hot. So can a weak starter -- the engine must turn 100 rpm minimum or it won't start.

Another possibility is out of spec injection timing.

Get the valves adjusted -- tight exhaust valves will hang open when hot since the stem gets longer as it heats up.

Also, I've found it necessary to use the glowplugs even if the engine is hot -- prechamber diesels just don't really like to start without them unless you just shut it off!

That starter knob is a huge PITA, eh?
