280SEL Mechanical Advance?

My mechanic informed me that the distributor on the '73 4.5 is not getting the full advance at approx. 3500 RPMS. He said it was about 25 degrees advanced. Then he set the timing to 0 degrees to help it out a little. He gave me an old junker distributor to pull apart so I could see the the flyweights and get ideas to fix mine. I did so on the old one, saw how it works but haven't done anything to mine. I don't have a timing light or dwell meter so I cant take it apart to see what's up.
I'm wondering if anyone has come across this problem before and knows what might be up. I'm having him take a look at it in a couple of weeks cause it also has a crappy hot idle and the cold idle is a little rough too. It has new plugs, wires, points and timing and dwell have been set.
Oh just thought i'd mention that this mechanic is really cool. He fixed my 76' 300D which had been set one tooth off on the timing chain AND had the cam gear on backwards by another mechanic. He was going to do it for free but I insisted on paying him half an hour.

Joshol,
Can a friend of mine get this guys opinion on a noise he is having in his engine? We are both in San Jose. Just a diagnosis and pay for a half hour?

FWIW, I am fond of cleaning these weight pivots and the plate it rubs on, then greasing them with silicone grease.

Hey 240Ed, I can email you the shops number, but no promises on the shop rate!
I've been going to the shop for many years and have bought them many a beer.

joshol:

Factory spec is 19-22 degrees at 3000 rpm, 23-27 degrees at 4000 rpm. You should be fine. Proper static timing is 7 degrees BTDC at cranking speed, in case the vac retard is screwy.

Maker CERTAIN the timing is set to either 7 BTDC WITHOUT vac or 5 ATDC WITH vac, the
"advance" retards the timing at idle for emissions control, it doesn't advance the timing at all.

Rough idle can be pooped injectors, or more likely, a vacuum leak. Places to check are the intake manifold seals between the top and bottom halves, the vacuum lock system, and the vac modulator on the tranny. They will all cause idle problems.

The trigger points in the bottom of the distributor can give you fits with idle, too, along with surging and delayed throttle response -- take them out and clean them when you have your mechanic set the timing back to spec (you ARE using only good premium, right?).

You may also need to have the idle and running mixture checked -- this requires a CO meter and some time......

Peter

BUSTED!

Peter, how did you know I was putting in the occasional tank of mid-grade!?
I did buy the thing for $500 dollars ya know, does that make a difference?

BTW, the local genius is working on the car and I'll let you know what he finds. Funny thing is he insists that the advance should be mid 30s and he knows these things like bread knows butter.
I do need to adjust the valves, I think that would help.
Haven't performed that job before so I think this is a good car to learn on.

With the appetite these things have for fuel, who hasn't tried midgrade?

Besides, mine starts MUCH better on midgrade, and gets better milage, too.

Factory training manual lists the advance times I show -- the older sixes have more advance, by the way, as does the pre 72 3.5/4.5.

Randy Durrance, a long time poster with mercedesshop.com and other MB web sites, has a very informative web site concerning MB distributors. It is : http://www.durranceeng.com . He has been ill and may not be able to answer your direct questions, but the man sure knows his distributors!! Anyone have an update on how Randy is doing?

It's back.
The plates with the flyweights were all rusted up and stuck.
Now It feels like it has more snarl. It sounds smoother, I could only imagine what a Really nice 4.5 sounds like.
This one was left to decay after a certain point but someone attempted to restore certain things here and there. I'm lucky it runs as well as it does.
So Psfred, I'm thinking that the advance is around 22 but thats including the 7 BTDC when the vac shuts off making it 30 overall.
How does that sound?

Thanks for the link to Randy's page, it is awesome.
I have to go outside and oil the distributor on the 63 right now.

AFAIK, the vac only shuts off when you're running the AC or something.
