I'm selling my 1972 300SEL 4.5

Unfortunately I must sell my beloved 1972 300SEL because I will be moving soon and won't have space to keep it. I just listed it on eBay but wanted to the folks on mercedesshop know about it too. I have put a low buy it now price of only $2,900. I know the car is worth a good bit more but I need to sell it soon.

Question Re; 300sel 4.5

Mr. Duffey,

Perhaps I am mistaken. I have always been under the impression that ANY 300sel would ONLY have come from the Mercedes Benz factory with the HUGE 6.3 litre V8 installed. Also, it is my understanding that said vehicle would ALSO ONLY have had the pneumatic (air) suspension installed. Your low price would indicate to me, at least, that your vehicle would indeed be the 280 sel with the larger V8 for that particular model. ie:the STRONG 4.5 litre V8 as o[pposed to the OTHER V8, the 3.5 litre or EVEN the straight 6 cylinder 2.8 litre engine. The 280 se and or the 280 sel car with any of the aforementioned engines would ONLY come STOCK with the "normal" shox and springs.

Pllease allow us here at the forum to know the CORRECT specifications of your vehicle. This is only to enable a more realistic comprehension of value of FUTURE vehicles for sal

Personally, I do beleive that the "normal" suspension if far less of a PITA than the better riding and handling LIMITED EDITION HOT ROD 300sel suspension.

Respectfully, spo out.

he knows what car he has...

the 300SEL indeed was available with the 2.8 six, or the 4.5 v8, in addition to the limited production 6.3. A 300sel (109 chassis) has air suspension, while the 280se/l (108 chassis) has steel suspension, and was available with 2.8 or 4.5.

as for the seemingly low price for a 300sel- in my experience, the air suspension cars are usually cheaper than conventional susp. versions, I imagine b/c people are scared of the greater maintanence they require.

spo, you ARE mistaken! You should make sure you know what you are talking about before implying someone is being dishonest.

jw, sorry you had to sell her.

The 300sel is easy to spot with all the stainless steel trim around the windows, nice car.

I had to give my 72 300sel 4.5 to an ex girlfriend in 1981, to get her to leave, LOL........it was worth it.

I still have a very nice 73 280se 4.5 that I replaced it with, but I miss the air bags, they handled awesome for a sedan.

Very fast cars.

Don't let misinformed people get to you, hell what do they know?

Good luck with your move!

Sad you had to sell it, it looked like it was a beauty to have. I wish my 108 had that little rust!

Unhappy Re: 280 sel 4.5

Dear Mr. Duffey,

please do not think that you have been accused of dishonesty. If you care to reread my previous post, it shouldbe rather obvious that there was NO disrespect implied. I was only interested in an objective response which would EITHER allow me to learn something about these vehicles that has eluded me for my 25 years or so of driving and LOVING old Mercedes Benz cars or PERHAPS find if the car of your's was actually a 280.

I have never heard of the 300 series selling in the USA with other than the hot rod engine.

Respectfully, I am GLAD to learn something new each and every day. That is what makes life so enjoyable. I understand your sadness to let go of your "beloved" benz. It seems that the 4.5 engine would actually be more cost effective than the monster 6.3 with all of it's associated limited production parts. As previously stated, the air suspension is regarded as the better handling of the two
types of suspension.

Again, best wishes always, spo out.
