The 6.3 has a dual point distributor, best set on a test stand. Set dwell for each set individually to 18 degrees (use 4 cylinder setting), then check dwell with both sets -- should be 36 plus or minus 2 degrees. May change up to 3 degrees at 4000 rpm.

Check the timing on both sets (#1 and on #5). If they are not the same, by loosening the clamp screws and using the cam-head screw to change the relationship between the two sets. You will need to reset the dwell and again check timing on set B after doing this.

Ignition timing is dependent upon year of manufacture -- up to 69, 26 BTDC @ 3000 rpm on #1, 64 ATDC on #5, 70/71 32 BTDC on #1, 58 ATDC on #5, 1972 on, 5 ATDC with vac.

Find someone with a Distributor Tester . . . It'll save you a lot of time and trouble . . .

Thanks very much. My buddy has a shop and is doing the basics, hoses, belts, etc. since we don't know how old everything is.

He called one of the big time gurus on these cars and the guy was very unhelpful, my friend had run the car out of fuel with a bad gauge and couldn't restart. The "guru" basically told him we needed to buy a new fuel pump, oem fuel tank and a bunch of stuff.

A new set of plugs did the trick, runs great!

I sure appreciate the forum and the helpful attitude of those who don't have anything to sell.
