Use the ATF. Use synthetic too and it'll keep the temperature down. Check yours and see what's in it.

Did Not Know This!
Manual transmissions from the 50's 60's and 70's all use ATF!
Wow, G only knows whats in the Fintail right now. The book said damage can occur to the needle bearings when gear oil is used. Anyone have some insight on this topic??

Well, I knew Mercedes manuals used ATF.
Have you checked to see what's in yours? Many years ago, I accidentally filled my 180b gearbox with gear oil. I drained it right away and refilled with ATF. Never had a problem after that. Happy Motoring, Mark

Last time it was on the hoist, my mech checked the fluid level and I'm 99% sure it wasn't red. Guess he doesn't know that either.
As far as changing the fluid in there, it is straight forward right? Heat, drain and refill? How does Mobil Synthetic ATF sound?

I remember my SAAB required 30 weight motor oil in its manual transmissions. Thought it was kinda weird.

It's a darn good idea, to always try and open the top (fill) plug first. They can be tough to get out. Once you are sure you can fill it back up, then go ahead and drain it. Otherwise, you are going to have a real tough time trying to get oil back in there.

MGs and some Triumphs require the use of 20W-50 engine oil in their gearboxes. I use Red Line MTL in my TR6's 'box which helps out greatly when it's cold. Those English gears don't like syncing until everything's nice and warm, kind of like a Porsche 911 'box. Both the 911s and the TR6s gearboxes are notorious for 2nd gear synchros going out. A customer of mine who has an '85 911 Carrera is experiencing the 2nd gear synchro going south. The car has 197K on it and when we serviced it last, I also noticed 1st is getting iffy. Told him it was time for a rebuilt gearbox, and of course got the usual sigh and shrug.
