point gap change
Hi, I have a 1973 Mercedes 450SL engine117.982 chassis 107.044
When I set the points the car will run well for five minutes then die if I go back in and check the point gap it has closed or almost closed. The screw to set the gap is not stripped and is in good working order. My question is this because the distributor bushings are worn or is it something I am missing?? Thanks in advance for your response!! Thanks, Chaosmosis |

Place a drop of green LocTite in the breaker screw hole before placing in the screw. Adjust your dwell and tighten down the screw, but do not over tighten, just enough to set the breakers. Once set and the dwell meter still attached, turn the engine over and watch if the dwell changes any. It should stay the same.
I have had a problem with the breaker protection cap not be placed on correctly. If not fully set into place it will change the dwell. |

Also make sure the area under the screw is clean and dry. A small bit of crud will prevent the screw from clamping down properly.
Make sure you are not just leaving the adjusting screw to hold the points in place, too -- the eccentric screw is for setting, there is another screw to clamp the points down! Peter
