Use JC Whitney Tools on a Mercedes Front End

I am getting ready to replace the Wayward Woman's (1981 380SL money pit) steering box. I have been looking at the tools needed to separate the drag link from the pittman arm and to remove the pittman arm from the steering shaft.

I was considering this tool from Technitool for $98 for the drag link.

http://www.technictool.com/bmw267.htm

Then the JC Whitney catalog came, and it had an almost identical tool for $10 on page 57.

And for $120, I can get a complete set of suspension tools:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=374363&BQ=jcw2

The set seems like a good deal. Any opinions? These are tools that will be used occasionally at best.

TIA

Have you checked local autoparts stores like Advance or Pep Boys? I've had cheap tools that worked fine and others that were junk. My first thought was to try that $10 tool before buying that $120 set.
Will J.C.Whitney give a refund if you're not happy with the set?

Happy Motoring, Mark

I reccomend the $17 unit for JCwhitney..it works. The only issue with it is that I need to put a socket over the bolt to get the extra leverage needed to pry about the tie rod ends. http://jcwhitney.com/item.jhtml?ITEMID=19652&BQ=jcw2

As for removing the pittman arm itself from the steering box you'd need soemthing heavy duty and more along the lines of gympie's suggestion but again I'm sure you'll need extract spacing on the pullers arms so that it doesn't slip off.

I've used the one gmask supplied the link for and found it capable of about 50% of the jobs, others not at all. I eventually managed to break it. When it did work, it chewed up the boot of the joint it was freeing, so I wouldn't use it on any ball stud joint you aren't replacing.

Hmm.. I didn't have the problem ..I remember reading somewhere about just cutting a piece of cardboard or something to cover the rubber part with so it doesn't get trashed.
