What do you think of this one?
I went to check this car today. It’s a 220d, 115.110 60 imported from South Africa in 1978, engine 615.912 registered in 1972. Only 1 registration, that means that since the car was sold in 86 no one could drive it in the public roads. The car as bean in a garage parked from 1986 to 2002 in the ands of an engineer that never finished the recover. A young guy got it last year and just left it on the front door of is house. The painting is cracking all over, it was originally yellow. The engine runs very good, its very dirty but no marks of leaking fluids. The gearbox feels smooth besides the fact that changing from 1º gear to 2º is a bit hard and reverse is a bit loose. Same rust inside in the front, there are 2 holes as you can see in the pictures and superficially in the trunk. Brakes are working very well. The biggest problem seems to be the electric part, front lights aren’t working and I couldn’t check if the rest is working. I think the picture says it all.
Any comments on the car are welcome, especially about the electric problems and what precautions to take, since it doesn’t run that much for so long. Thanks |

New rubber grommets on shift linkage arms can tighten the gear shift. I'd check the fusebox first for electrical problems, corrosion often occurs between fuses and contacts. Very rarely does repaint work do justice to original MB finish. I've got the same problem with my 2nd car where "new" paint has cracked from sunlight.
Oil consumption, smoking and quick cold-start are concerns with diesel engine.... also check the air filter for oil from "blowby". Best way to check for rust is put the car on a lift and explore with a rubber hammer...... also inspect flex discs between driveshaft, transmission and differential..... and motor mounts, suspension links, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. It looks like a very good car....... refugee from South Africa in 1978? Am someone who believes where cars have been determines their character. |

You will need to replace ALL the rubber -- windshield gaskets (this is why there is rust in the trunk and front floorpans -- check under the rear seat bottom cushion, too!), door seals, front subframe and rear subframe mounts, tranny mount, engine mounts, diff mounts, and sway bar bushings, they have all died of old age, running or not.
If it starts well, and doesn't use oil, there is nothing wrong with the engine or drive train. You may be showing signs of worn second gear synchros, but check the linkages, this tranny has external levers, so if the bushings are missing, it's sloppy. Check the bulbs in the headlamps, those are the Euro halogens and the bulbs may be shot. Peter

The rubber looks new, I think its was changed not that long ago. In still trying to buy the car. Its difficult because of the electrical problems I can’t pass in the inspection and move the car, 300km is too much to pay for a truck. I fond a 240d from 74 closer to home but in very poor conditions and whit over 500.000km. Is there a big difference from the 2200cc to the 2400cc engine that justify recovering 2.4 instead keeping a good condition 2.2 ?
