My new car
Hello everyone, I am now the pround owner of a 72 300 SEL with 51,000 original miles. Having my mechanic start the necessary repairs as we speak, car has been stored for about 6 years so intresting condition, replacing orginal schocks, new pads and turing rusty rotors, I really did not beleive this car had 51,000 miles but mechanic has not convenced me it is so! Interior near perfect, wood is just beautiful. OK, OK, I'm going to stop. QUESTION, what tire would you (and of you) use on this car, I will keep the 14" wheels although I though of going to the Mercedes 16", as I understand they will work. Looking for a good smooth ride, I doubt if I ever will have this car over 85. Any comments or "heads up would be apreciated. Thanks, Jim.

This is going to be way to much time, money and trouble for you to deal with. I will spare you all the heart ache and drive down from Temple and take the car off your hands. Let me know!

FireStone Affinity LS 30 or Michellin MVX4s. The Firestones will only set you back $300 for a set, ride VERY nicely, handle very well, and have excellent wet and ice traction. Also very quiet.
I just put a set on the 280 SE, love them. The 300D has Michellins, also very nice tires but more expensive. The alloys off a W123 will fit, and were a factory option, either style. Peter

Agree with Mike- you'll be driving that over 85 and should put tires on for that eventuality.

I was just faced with the same dilemma about tires for my '69 300SEL 6.3 and it just so happens that Michelin discontinued the Energy MXV4 in a 205/70R14 size just before I was ready to buy a set!!
So since I have had experience with Yokohamas, I went for a set of the Avid T4s in the 205 size. They're not as high a speed rating as the Michelins are but should be fine for the limited use I give the car.

I don't know what the Frogs are thinking when they discontinue something that was a mainstay like the MXV4, they kept messing with them, one year it was the Energy label added and the previous mix was out. So I switched to Pirelli, using a set of P4000 Super Touring and since then I bought two sets of P6000 V rated tires too. I like them a lot but they won't outlast the Michelins.
