Battery Light on - want it to go off - Fan Belt too loose?

Hi my 1970 250c has recently been displaying battery light inside car? I recently bought a new battery and was wondering if it was the right one?? it says 870 cranking amps- 700cold cranking amps. I also remember that there was like a speaker type wire that went to one of the post on the battery?? Am I right or am I crazy?? Will driving with light on drain my battery?? HOw do I fix this??
Thanks

Probably a weak alternator. Check the voltage ( connect a multi-meter to the positive and negative posts of the battery), and you should see 13.2 - 13.5 volts. Lower than this, and you probably need to replace your alternator.

If you get a good reading, then the wiring to the light has a problem.

The mystery wire is probably for a non-factory stereo or alarm system.

What happened with your transmission problem?

Jennifer, here's quick check for alternator, voltage regulator......

Get the car running in your driveway at night. Starting with the headlights, turn on every electrical component in the car including the radio, heater fan and interior lights.

Then see if headlights dim as the engine idles - or see if they brighten as you tap the pedal for higher rpm's.

Also, see if the headlights get dimmer as you turn on radio, heater fan and other components.

If there is no visible change in headlight brightness at all - then you might be getting false reading from the dashboard light..... and you can "fix" this nuisance by covering the dashboard glass over the light with small piece of black electrical tape.

Otherwise, the dimming of the lights will tell you if your alternator and regulator are doing their job.

On my 280, the wire on the (+) terminal is for the fuel pump.

My sure-fire alternator check: Start the car. Pull the (-) terminal. If it stalls, the alternator is bad. If it keeps running, then it's fine. If it does stall, replace your alternator - it WILL drain your battery!

oops - i now realize your asking if the belt is too loose...

Does the loose fan belt also turn the alternator?
if so than the alternator may not be turning at the proper RPMs which in turn would limit the juce going to your battery/car.
