Over torqued sub mounts?
When I watched the guy screw in the bolts for the subs, he used an air gun and torqued the crap outta those poor things. It sucked the rubber down good. The car rode like it was on a pillow for the first day, then after that no difference from the old mounts.
Why is good help so hard to find!!!? I didn't know any better, so I held my tongue. I checked the Chassis manual the other night and torque spec for the mounts is only 45Nm which is about 33 pound feet. Can anyone verify my conversion? Guess I'll have to get new mounts and do it again or try loosening and re-torquing, but its been >6 months. This is regarding the 76 300D. Thanks

Loosen and retorque, if you are lucky they aren't squashed to death yet.
I hate power tools sometimes, they always seem to cause me terrible trouble when other people use them. I've seen lug bolts on a W126 tightened down till they bent so badly they wouldn't come out -- required pulling the entire hub and drilling them out from the back to remove the wheel, and I suspect the wheel was bent, too. The tire shop responsible didn't want to fix it..... Peter

Feels much better now, kind of like I used to remember how she rode.
But, the rear forward mounts have been terminally crushed. They're about 2/3 the size of the forward mounts. Now I will obsess until I get all new mounts but will wait until I rebuild the front end. At least I got something done today.
