Ate Only?

Guys, Gals..

In an effort to get the 250c ready for Mom to drive I thought i 'd go thur the brakes. I had a new set of calipers but alas I have
the ate top feed hard line type. sheesh.. the ones i have stashed that are new are a center line feed. Odd?
So it looks like only ATE has the correct location for the feed.
My question is this the one that are on there ahave lots of pitting on the piston, but seals are in tact is it ok to rebuilt them in this shape?

If the pitting is above the seal in the caliper bore, they will work. Otherwise, toss.

Brakes are kinda critical, don't take chances.

You must have the correct caliper for the application -- there are a number of different ones that look almost identical, but they are not interchangeable. Line location is sometimes related to where the caliper is -- fronts are different than rears, and it isn't a good idea to swap them -- the pistons in the front caliper are larger.

What I would do is take the chassis number to a good part supplier or mechanic and determine which calipers you need, including the exact part number, then compare to what you have. I'd only put in exact replacements.

yes Pete,

Thanks, but 250c is a 71 but an earley one more like a 70, so yeah the ate is the only one that is correct.

My local parts place(arm and a leg) 149.00 each .
ouch.. and i was just saying how i had escaped serious money
spending on the car. No matter she's worth it!

Changing from top 'hard line' caliper to center line caliper? You didn't say if it was your front or rear calipers. I ran into this problem on the REAR brakes of my '72 W114 250. The replacement rear calipers had been superceded to the later center line type, as used on the W123 cars. It required the longer, later style brakehoses to eliminate the bracket and short metal connecting pipe and finish the job.

Ironically, I had recently replaced my 250's original rear brake hoses and had to replace them again for the new rear calipers. But I kept those nearly new hoses and one was a perfect replacement for the plugged up rear hose on my recently acquired '60 220S.

Happy Motoring, Mark
