w115/114 confusion
hi,
i have a 1972 w115 220 and it has some features slightly different from the 200 i saw on the other day, it has a more classic looking steering with column shift gear, quater ventilator window, single chrome side mirrow( all as in the one of w108). beside the dashboard are slightly different from the 200 or 240d! i also knoticed some difference in the rear lights and a slightly narrower front grille! is my car a prefacelift model or mb have 2 version of 115/114 model? if the former are correct, can somebody tell me when does it start production till the facelift? thanks for any one clear my confusion as i was'n born in those days!:p |

Hello,
There were two distinctive W114/115: 1. 1968 to 1973: narrow grille, ventilators in front side windows, flat taillite lenses, smaller rounded edge front seats and many details of interior trim, horn ring steering wheel and column gearchange and many other differences I am sure I have missed. 2. 1973 to 1976: wide grille, no ventilators, wide alloy trim around windscreen to deflect rain water, fluted taillites, squared off seats with headrests, crash pad steering wheel, floor gearchange, improved manual and auto trans etc. etc. Search the web, there are many excellent German websites dedicated to the /8s with a lot of information. Have a good week.

thanks!
another question, my car wont start at the morning, i have to give the pedal some kick(about a minute or so) before it really runs, after that the car drives normally! the previous owner told me that this scenario was due to the carb! does this means carb motor are like that or there is some fault with the car! the car was original, engine, chassis etc! pls advice by the way, what did you guys think is the best price range for a w116 s-class and what to look for when seeking one! |

Hello,
I can only hazard a guess at the cold start difficulty: 1. Broken automatic choke-remedy new unit at $M 1,000 2. Cracked rubber carb mounting-remedy new unit $M 80-100 3. Needs tune up (new spark plugs, contact points etc.) You can also be smug and buy a NEW carb for about $M 4,000(US$ 1,000 here in KL, it costs US$ 2,400 in the USA !, don't ask me how I know). Used units are a waste of time as all wear in the throttle spindle bearing area, causing air leaks and all sorts of idle and running headaches.Used choke units are usually a waste of time and money as well because the fuel metering plunger seizes inside the housing and causes very rich running and then sticks shut during a cold start! And whatever a mechanic tells you, the W123 200 (M115) carb will not fit as it has a completely different idle mixture circuit and the choke was improved with each successive version of carb. I did not buy a new carb BUT I did buy a new throttle body (or main body), float, float valve, metering needle, metering jet, return valve repair kit, rubber diaphram and a gasket kit. I rebuilt the whole thing and now the car runs like, well, new EXCEPT the auto choke does not work but with the weather around here, the car will start and run OK without choke when it is adjusted correctly and does about 12.5L/100km around the city and 10.2L/100km on long trips running at 110-140kmh. You can buy a W116 for as little as $M 6,000 (it will be a real dog) or look for a few OK cars at around $M 15-26,000. At that price, the car would have to be darn near perfect, with all original stuff intact and working. Look for the last years, eg 1978-1980 and preferably a 280SE, as a 280S will need a new Solex 4A1 carb that sells for about $M 7,000.(sorry, none around in junkyards anymore !) Rust is the enemy, look for severe damage around the firewall area where the front anti-roll bar bushes are located. I have a 450SEL sitting in a warehouse(no road tax) and it has some rust issues and the 4.5 engine loves gasoline, so for the time being it only runs on dry Sunday nights ! I think I have covered everything and hope it is of some help to you. Have a good week.

wow! that is going to burn a big hole in my pocket!!!
i think i am going to leave it where it is at the moment, as long as the car runs! will this cause problem to the car if i ignore this problem is that possible to not pay your roadtax? would the road traffic department take action against this? if is ok to not pay the road tax, i would definitely do so in coming future as i am leaving to uk further my studies, nobody in my house going to drive the car anymore, my sis might promise me to start the engine once a while! another alternative is to sell the car |
